ABOUT THE EVENT

Wellington’s Model World Trade Organisation theme is UN+Connected. We intend to emphasise the interconnectedness of international trade, and bring to focus how reliant member states are on one another for survival. The topic of the debate is on The Question of the International Trade of Natural Resources. Delegates will be assigned member states of the African Union, who, as a bloc, are in negotiations with the European Union on a free trade agreement. This agreement will focus primarily on economics, including the trade of specific goods, and incorporate vocabulary such as tariffs, quotas, exchange rates, non-tariff barriers and embargos. The resolution will be written from the perspective of the European Union, making initial asks of the African Union for a free trade agreement. The event is economics-focused, but does not require any prior knowledge. Everybody interested in economics is welcome to attend.

ABOUT UN YOUTH

UN Youth is a non-profit organisation that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom context. Through fun workshops and conferences, we engage youth in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Our goal is to inspire young New Zealanders to be active, global citizens. Global citizenship exists in an incredibly diverse range of forms, and UN Youth provides opportunities for delegates to develop their own form of active citizenship. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. Annually, over 3000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Southland attend a UN Youth event, run by a body of over 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their time to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
