ABOUT THE EVENT

Tēnā koe e hoa! Auckland Model United Nations (AMUN) is back and better than ever! AMUN 2023 is the largest UN Youth event in New Zealand and is held over two days at Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland. We welcome hundreds of rangatahi from Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond.

WHAT IS AMUN?

AMUN is an annual event enabling high school students to develop a diplomatic perspective toward the world's pressing issues today. Delegates will each represent a country to stimulate a typical United Nations General Assembly where topics of debate will be current and relevant. Participants will represent their country's viewpoints while considering their nation's political, economic, and cultural standards. They delve into the issues of an interconnected world wrought with complexities, working together to create solutions for global problems.

UN Youth Auckland acknowledges that te Tiriti o Waitangi (te Tiriti) is the founding document of Aotearoa, New Zealand. We recognise that a key intent of Te Tiriti was to uphold relationships of mutual benefit between the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa and acknowledge the events prior, present, and future that have deeply affected our society. In upholding this partnership principle set out in Te Tiriti, UN Youth Auckland adopts tikanga values as a guiding framework for our events. UN Youth Auckland also would like to acknowledge the mana whenua of this rohe ngā iwi kātoa o Tāmaki Makaurau and their right as kaitiaki over this land.

OUR GOAL

On maps, uncharted territories are often marked as unsafe or risky due to the obstacles, rough waters, and hardships involved. For AMUN 2023, our theme 'UN+CHARTED' aims to equip each and every delegate with the skills and confidence to sail into the uncharted waters of their future. Through the committee sessions, workshops, and speaker panel, delegates will gain a greater understanding of complex global issues and develop essential skills and qualities - such as communication, negotiation, and empathy - that will be transferable to their future endeavours, whatever they may be.

WHY SHOULD I ATTEND AMUN?

AMUN provides various opportunities through interactive workshops, committee sessions, and guest speakers for rangatahi to empower one another. Delegates can develop strong connections with fellow high school students and gain new insights into international affairs. Whether a participant is an introvert or extrovert, new to politics, or a future Prime Minister, AMUN provides a valuable experience for all delegates to gain new knowledge and skills. By offering new perspectives and debates on international affairs, delegates are given opportunities to grow their confidence, strengthen their public speaking and develop negotiation skills.

Moreover, this conference allows delegates to better understand their place in the world as global citizens. We hope delegates will leave our event feeling empowered and inspired to spark positive change in their local and global communities. Regardless of whether this is a delegate's first UN Youth event or their tenth, AMUN 2023 will be an experience to remember!

MĀORI & PASIFIKA PROGRAMME (M&PI)

We are delighted to confirm the Māori and Pasifika Programme will return to our AMUN Conference this year! This programme allows M&PI participants to meet and empower each other in a safe environment before and throughout the conference. There is no additional cost to participate in this programme.
