The New Zealand Model Parliament (NZMP) 2024, held from 6–8 September at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, brought together 160 participants for an exciting, hands-on experience of how New Zealand’s Parliament operates, including the important work of select committees.
The event kicked off with inspiring speeches from Greens MP Kahurangi Carter and Labour MP Dr. Duncan Webb, who encouraged participants to realise the power they have to influence not just national politics, but also to make a difference within their communities.
This year’s NZMP introduced something new: MP office visits. Several lucky students spent time with Labour MP Megan Woods, National MP Hamish Campbell, and Green MP Lan Pham, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the work MPs do in their daily lives. It was an invaluable experience highlighting the realities of representing communities in New Zealand’s Parliament.
Throughout the event, participants gained a deep understanding of parliamentary processes, while also developing practical skills through workshops on negotiation and crisis management. These sessions were a real highlight, offering attendees the chance to practise resolving political challenges and managing high-pressure situations, skills that will serve them well.
The media and politics panel, featuring Thomas Mead, Dr Donald Matheson, and Hariklia Nicola, was another standout. Their discussion of the media’s role in shaping political debate in Aotearoa sparked lively conversations and had a clear impact on the participants, especially the press representatives.
William Grant from the University of Canterbury rounded off the event with a thought-provoking talk on tikanga and law, which resonated deeply with attendees and sparked some of the most meaningful discussions of the weekend.
NZMP 2024 wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our volunteers and the event committee. We owe a huge thank you to everyone involved for making it such a success. We’re excited to see how the event evolves next year, and we can’t wait to watch it grow from strength to strength.
