ABOUT THE EVENT
DESCRIPTION:
Are you seeking a high-level leadership opportunity that combines event coordination,
climate policy, and youth empowerment? The Wellington Youth Climate Conference
(WYCC) returns in 2025, and we are now recruiting a capable, purpose-driven committee
to deliver one of the region’s most impactful youth-led events.
WYCC 2025 is a two-day conference designed to build climate literacy, develop
leadership skills, and empower secondary school students to engage with
environmental issues on both a local and global scale. The event provides a unique
platform for rangatahi to collaborate on policy ideas, connect with community leaders,
and participate in climate diplomacy.
● Day One will consist of issue-based working groups, where participants will
explore specific climate-related topics in depth. Facilitated discussions,
interactive workshops, and guest speakers will guide each group in co-authoring
a collective declaration or position paper to present to local changemakers.
● Day Two will simulate the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP).
Delegates will represent a range of actors—including countries, companies, and
civil society organisations—and negotiate a climate resolution through
structured debate. The simulation is designed to develop participants’ skills in
public speaking, negotiation, and international cooperation.
Being part of the WYCC 2025 Committee is a significant leadership opportunity.
Committee members will play an integral role in designing and delivering a professional,
high-impact event while gaining hands-on experience in project management,
stakeholder engagement, and youth-focused education.
Before applying, we encourage all prospective applicants to carefully consider their
existing commitments, including study, employment, and involvement in other
organisations or clubs. Committee members should expect to dedicate approximately 5
to 10 hours per week, with this time varying depending on the stage of planning. A key
requirement is consistent attendance at a weekly one-hour in-person committee
meeting.
This opportunity is open to individuals aged 18 and over who are no longer enrolled in
the secondary education system, and who are based in the Lower North Island. While
we welcome applicants from across the region, please keep in mind that you will need
to be available to attend meetings in person. Prior involvement with UN Youth is not a
requirement. The event is set to be in early August, however this is subject to change.
AVAILABLE ROLES:
Coordinator
The Coordinator oversees the overall planning and delivery of the event. This role is
best suited to someone with a clear sense of vision and the initiative to act on it.
Coordinators must be capable of navigating ambiguity, managing multiple tasks at once,
and bringing structure to a fast-paced environment. Strong organisational skills,
reliability, and the ability to lead a team effectively are essential. This role will require
regular collaboration with the wider committee and Regional Council.
Logistics
The Logistics Officer ensures the operational feasibility and smooth execution of the
event. This includes managing the budget, coordinating key logistics across both days,
and liaising with external providers for catering, merchandise, printed materials, and
other event supplies. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys problem-solving, and
is comfortable working with numbers and time-sensitive tasks. This role is critical to
ensuring the event is well-resourced, accessible, and professionally delivered.
Communications
The Communications Officer is responsible for all public-facing content related to the
conference. This includes designing promotional materials, drafting social media posts,
managing correspondence with participants, and producing the conference information
packs. Strong written communication, good time management, and a proactive
approach to workload are essential. Design experience is not required, but an eye for
presentation and a willingness to learn new skills are highly encouraged.
Educations
The Educations Officer is responsible for curating the content that underpins both days
of the event. This includes writing materials for rōpū discussions on day one, as well as research briefings and the resolution for the COP-style simulation on day two. This role
is ideal for someone who has a strong interest in climate policy, environmental science,
or international relations, and who is confident in their ability to research and
communicate complex information clearly. A genuine passion for writing and content
development is essential, as is the ability to distil technical concepts into accessible and
engaging resources for high school students.
Relations
The Relations Officer is responsible for building partnerships with external
stakeholders. This includes inviting guest speakers, liaising with local organisations, and
securing contributions from community changemakers. This role requires strong
interpersonal skills, professional communication, and the ability to manage multiple
external relationships. It is ideal for someone who is confident in reaching out to new
contacts and passionate about connecting young people with real-world actors in the
climate space.

ABOUT UN YOUTH
UN Youth is a non-profit organisation that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom context. Through fun workshops and conferences, we engage youth in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Our goal is to inspire young New Zealanders to be active, global citizens. Global citizenship exists in an incredibly diverse range of forms, and UN Youth provides opportunities for delegates to develop their own form of active citizenship. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. Annually, over 3000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Southland attend a UN Youth event, run by a body of over 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their time to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
