UN Youth Auckland’s beginner-friendly event exploring the Asia-Pacific is back again this year!
Running on the 8th (Year 7-10 students) and 9th (Year 11-13 students) of August at the University of Auckland, this event will give students the opportunity to represent a country from the Asia-Pacific region as they work with other delegates to create constructive solutions to real-world problems.
The theme for MAP this year is UN+ANCHORED, representing the need for decision makers who can take on a world currently defined by drift and explore troubled waters. MAP captures the current geopolitical environment of profound unsteadiness, with a region no longer held in place by the assumptions, institutions, and security frameworks that once shaped it. By being UN+ANCHORED, delegates will be able to start their journeys as multi-national problem solvers with broad skillsets.
Model Asia Pacific is perfect for those who are new to Model UN events and is specifically tailored towards beginners. MAP is open to intermediate students as well as high school students, creating a unique entry point into UN Youth events that allows our younger rangatahi to expand their horizons. Students will be able to learn about debate and international politics in a safe, structured environment where they feel empowered to engage with real-world problem-solving.
Participants will take part in a committee session (small group Model UN session), an Interactive Problem Solving Workshop, and a plenary session (large scale Model UN session).
ABOUT UN YOUTH
UN Youth is a non-profit organisation that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom context. Through fun workshops and conferences, we engage youth in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Our goal is to inspire young New Zealanders to be active, global citizens. Global citizenship exists in an incredibly diverse range of forms, and UN Youth provides opportunities for delegates to develop their own form of active citizenship. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. Annually, over 3000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Southland attend a UN Youth event, run by a body of over 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their time to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
