OUR HISTORY
UN Youth New Zealand was established in 1999 as the United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand, serving as the youth arm of the United Nations Association of New Zealand (UNA NZ). Founded by a group of passionate university students, the organization aimed to create spaces where young people could engage with global issues, develop leadership skills, and foster a deeper understanding of international affairs.

In its early years, UN Youth focused on organizing Model United Nations conferences and educational workshops, providing youth with platforms to simulate UN proceedings and debate pressing global challenges. These initiatives quickly gained popularity, leading to the expansion of programs and the establishment of regional branches in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago.

Recognizing the need to better reflect its mission and the communities it served, the organization rebranded to UN Youth New Zealand. This change signified a commitment to inclusivity and a broader engagement with youth across Aotearoa.

Over the years, UN Youth New Zealand has introduced a range of flagship events, including the Aotearoa Youth Declaration, New Zealand Model United Nations, and New Zealand Model Parliament. These events have become cornerstone experiences for thousands of young New Zealanders annually, offering immersive opportunities to explore policy-making, diplomacy, and civic participation.

In addition to national events, UN Youth has facilitated international tours, allowing delegates to engage with global institutions and cultures. These experiences have broadened participants' horizons and reinforced the organization's commitment to global citizenship.

Today, UN Youth New Zealand stands as Aotearoa's largest youth-for-youth charity, driven by volunteers aged 18–25. With a focus on empowering rangatahi through education and engagement, the organization continues to inspire the next generation of leaders and changemakers.
