The High School Ambassadors (HSA) Programme is UN Youth New Zealand’s nationwide leadership and outreach network, designed to empower young changemakers to champion civic engagement in their own schools and communities.

The programme is administered by each of UN Youth’s four regional councils, which means the HSA experience may look slightly different depending on where you are in Aotearoa. This allows each region to tailor the programme to local needs while still connecting ambassadors to our broader national kaupapa.

Each year, we select a passionate group of high school students from across the country to act as the face of UN Youth in their regions. HSAs play a key role in promoting our events, increasing awareness of global issues, and connecting more rangatahi with opportunities to learn, lead, and make a difference. Whether it’s organising in-school workshops, running presentations, or building networks of like-minded peers, HSAs are the bridge between UN Youth and the next generation of engaged citizens.

Being an HSA is about more than promotion — it’s about leadership development, public speaking, and gaining hands-on experience in youth-led advocacy. Ambassadors receive training, ongoing support, and the chance to collaborate with UN Youth volunteers nationwide. They’re often the first to know about exciting events, new programmes, and opportunities to get involved both locally and internationally.
