About the Event
Auckland Model United Nations (AMUN), New Zealand’s biggest UN Youth event is back and better than ever! This is Tāmaki Makaurau’s flagship event, involving over 400 rangatahi over two days at Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau, the University of Auckland.
WHAT IS AMUN?
This event encourages high schoolers to see global issues through the eyes of a diplomat. By participating in an abundance of interactive workshops, activities, and guest speakers across the event, and simulating a typical United Nations General Assembly, UN Youth aims to educate rangatahi on the issues our world faces today. In using diplomatic tools of discussion, debate, and negotiation, delegates must represent their state’s view whilst considering wider goals and complexities of global development, working together to create solutions for global issues.
AMUN 2021 would not be possible without the commitment and passion of our tertiary volunteer kaimahi (conference assistants)! Volunteers are central to every aspect of our event, working collaboratively to build a successful and enjoyable event for participants. Being a volunteer is an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling time, and a delegate’s experience often relies on the work of our kaimahi.
UN Youth Auckland acknowledges that te Tiriti o Waitangi (te Tiriti) is the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand. We recognise that a key intent of Te Tiriti was to uphold relationships of mutual benefit between the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, and acknowledge the events prior, present and future which has deeply affected our society. UN Youth Auckland also would like to acknowledge the mana whenua of this rohe ngā iwi kātoa o Tāmaki Makaurau and their right as kaitiaki over this land.
OUR THEME
AMUN 2021 focuses on the theme of empowerment, highlighting the everlasting consequences of UN+EMPOWERED groups in international affairs. Together, our delegates will engage with this multifaceted and intricate topic through committee sessions, each of which revolves around some of today’s most pressing issues. We not only hope that delegates grow an understanding of their place in the world, but their place in Aotearoa, having awareness of the tikanga māori worldview. Delegates will get the chance to analyse current local and international issues and gain knowledge of the barriers in tackling these problems.
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND AMUN?
As much as a delegate’s experience matters, yours as a volunteer matters to us just as much. Volunteering as a conference assistant not only expands your own knowledge about global citizenship and our place in the world, but provides an opportunity to meet like minded rangitahi, give back to the community, and gain volunteering experience. We welcome volunteers with all ranges of UN Youth experience - regardless of whether you are a returning volunteer or a new volunteer, what matters most is your dedication and enthusiasm towards making 2021’s Auckland Model United Nations the best yet!
We have a range of roles to suit a variety of interests and skills, offering different perspectives of our event. There will be a compulsory training hui prior to the conference, as well as a function after the event to thank all of our volunteers for their mahi.
We hope that this will be an experience that all can gain from, whether it be new friends, new knowledge, or new skills. More broadly, rangatahi are all too often perceived as UN+EMPOWERED, and most of all, we hope delegates and volunteers will leave our event empowered to strive to contribute to their local and global communities. On an ever changing global stage, delegates and volunteers will walk away from AMUN inspired to help change the tide of global development for the best.
Regardless of whether this is a volunteer’s first UN Youth event or their tenth, AMUN 2021 will be an experience to remember. Join us in making Auckland Model United Nations 2021 a fantastic event!
