About the Event
VOLUNTEER REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN NOW & CLOSE AT 11:59PM, 2nd MAY 2021. VOLUNTEER ATTENDANCE IS FREE AT THE CONFERENCE
What does democracy mean to everyday Kiwis? What should it mean?
In our brand new regional event, delve deeper into Aotearoa’s government - learn how we as citizens can raise our voices, how our elected officials interact with our concerns and the ever-evolving political and legal system of New Zealand.
Our two day event will feature workshops, speaker panels, and debate sessions where you step into the shoes of the elected. Engage in fast paced negotiations to form the governing party; write submissions and learn how citizen submissions influence local and national policy-making; and debate the implications of a written constitution in the existing legal system of Aotearoa.
We invite tertiary students to get involved as volunteers in any number of capacities, more information on which can be found below. Volunteers will be expected to attend a training event prior the event, which will likely be held at 17:00, Thursday 14th of May at Pipitea Campus, Victoria University of Wellington. This is important to familiaring you with expectations, the educational content and to meet your fellow volunteers!
Applications close at 23:59, Sunday 2nd of May, 2021.
If you had any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the coordinator, Emily, at emily.anderson@unyouth.org.nz.
VOLUNTEER ROLES
Chairperson
As the Chairperson, you will primarily be facilitating a room full of delegates engaged in rigorous debate.
Use and improve your leadership skills by moderating intense discussion about heavy political issues and encouraging all students to enthusiastically take part in the educational opportunity.
Clerk
The administrative backbone of the committee, the multi-tasking superhero, otherwise known as the Clerk (The Secretary in typical MUN-style events).
As the Clerk, you are tasked with working closely with the Chair of the committee in facilitating the direction of the debate - typing up amendments and speaker lists, all while organising them appropriately to the flow of the debate.
Parliamentary Counsel
As the Parliamentary Counsel (often known as the Special Rapporteur), you are the human Google of the committee.
When delegates (and even your fellow volunteers) in the room need relevant information for the continuation of the debate, your knowledge about the legal system of Aotearoa and the topics of debate will label you as essential and invaluable.
Otherwise, your quick Google-ing skills and the ability to quickly understand information and effectively relay them onto a group of delegates will be equally valuable and necessary.
Logistics Officer
No one can run on an empty stomach, no committee can run when the room is in a state of chaos. Logistics Officers come to the rescue for any and all behind the scenes tasks.
We are looking for organised superstars that are quick on their feet to help the event run smoothly for this role.
Welfare Officer
Two consecutive eight hour days of debate about contemporary political and social issues take a toll on everyone involved. With sympathy and empathy, welfare officers take upset, stressed, and unwell participants under their wing for the overall wellbeing of the event.
Due to the nature of this role, applicants with First Aid certificates will be preferred.
Media Team
Educational experience is not the only thing our participants take home at our events - a steady number of delegates gain a new profile picture or an Instagram update.
If you are proficient at handling your DSLR/mirrorless camera and some afterwork editing, join the media team to leave photographic evidence of the UN+forgettable two days for all those involved.
PLEASE NOTE: When applying you will only have 20 minutes to fill in your application form and there is a word limit of 400 characters which is around 64 words. We would recommend writing out your answers on a separate document and then pasting your answers in afterwards.
