About the Event

Tēnā koe e hoa! Auckland Model United Nations (AMUN) is back for 2026! Following the success of AMUN 2025, the largest UN Youth event in New Zealand, AMUN 2026 is set to continue the tradition while being better than ever! The event is held over two days at Te Whare Wānanga o Tāmaki Makaurau, the University of Auckland, where we welcome hundreds of rangatahi from Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond.

Conferences like Auckland Model United Nations are run by passionate tertiary students who volunteer their time to create unforgettable educational experiences for delegates!

What is AMUN?

AMUN is held annually to enable high school students to develop a diplomatic perspective toward the world's most pressing issues. Delegates will each represent a country, creating a simulation reminiscent of a standard United Nations General Assembly. The topics of debate will surround both current and relevant real-world challenges. Participants will represent their country's viewpoints while considering their nation's political, economic, and cultural climates. They will delve into the issues of an interconnected world wrought with complexities while simultaneously working together to create solutions for these contentious global issues.

Our Goal

The theme for this year’s conference, UN+RAVEL, encourages delegates to carefully untangle the complicated issues that shape our world. Today, young people are surrounded by huge amounts of information, and it can be difficult to understand what truly matters. UN+RAVEL invites participants to look closely, ask questions, and break big global challenges down into smaller pieces so they can be understood more clearly. Through committee debates and workshops, delegates will explore the ideas and viewpoints that sit underneath the problems we see today.

As conversations around the world become quicker and more confusing, it is more important than ever for rangatahi to have the skills to slow down and work things out thoughtfully. By the end of the conference, delegates will walk away with a stronger understanding of global issues and improved skills in communication and problem-solving, tools that will support them wherever they go next.

Role Descriptions

Committee Facilitator

Committee Facilitators run the individual committee rooms and are responsible for running the debate sessions and workshops. Chairs are the lead volunteers in the room and control the flow of debate. They are also responsible for leading the other committee facilitators in the room.

Logistics Officer

Logistics Officers work behind the scenes, ensuring that the conference runs smoothly. In this role, you will serve food, sign participants into the conference at the beginning of the day, and more. Logistics Officers think on their feet, have good communication skills, and work well in a team environment.

Welfare Officer

Welfare Officers are vital in ensuring that UN Youth events are a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all participants and volunteers. This role involves diligently monitoring the safety and well-being of participants and volunteers through looking after the mental, physical, and spiritual health of everyone involved in the conference.

Welfare Officers must be on-call and easily contactable throughout events to respond promptly to any welfare concerns that may arise. Patience, empathy, and the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds are key qualities for this role. Personal attributes such as pastoral care or peer support are highly valued.

Liaison roles are in addition to the Welfare Officer position. Māori and Pacific Peoples (MPP) Liaisons are responsible for creating a more inclusive and comfortable space for Māori and Pacifika delegates and volunteers. Queer Liaisons are responsible for creating a more inclusive and comfortable space for LGBTQ+ delegates and volunteers. Accessibility Liaisons are responsible for creating a more accessible and comfortable space for neurodiverse and disabled delegates and volunteers.

Media Officer

Documenting the event is the Media Officers' main responsibility.

You will work with other Media Officers and the AMUN Promotions Officer to document everything from robust committee debates to the formation of new friendships.

A media officer should collaborate with the promotions officer to ensure any media aligns with the overall vision and messaging of the conference, work closely with the other media officers to divide responsibilities, and ensure comprehensive event coverage.

ABOUT UN YOUTH

UN Youth is a non-profit organisation that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom context. Through fun workshops and conferences, we engage youth in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Our goal is to inspire young New Zealanders to be active, global citizens. Global citizenship exists in an incredibly diverse range of forms, and UN Youth provides opportunities for delegates to develop their own form of active citizenship. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. Annually, over 3000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Southland attend a UN Youth event, run by a body of over 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their time to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
