ABOUT THE EVENT

NZ Model UN (NZMUN) is UN Youth’s flagship Model UN conference. Held in the beautiful Whanganui a Tara Wellington, delegates assume the role of and represent UN nations. Across four days, delegates engage with global issues, advocating for their countries perspective in simulated committee and plenary sessions. In between, delegates are invited to participate in an all-around inspiring experience. Between engaging problem-solving workshops, and exciting guest speakers, students will be given a platform to discuss issues important to them! NZMUN gives delegates the opportunity to learn more about the world and their place in it as a global citizen.

As a volunteer, you'll play a vital role in facilitating the simulation of global diplomacy in the form of committees, and plenary sessions. Whether you chair a session, secretary, manage a regional group, or are involved in one of our operational teams, volunteers make it all possible. Volunteers make the NZMUN experience, giving delegates an amazing opportunity while upskilling and creating value for themselves.

  • Chair

As chair your role will be to facilitate the lively discussion that occurs during our committee sessions. Playing a key role in setting the flow of debate and atmosphere of committees, this role is key to providing a worthwhile and positive experience for delegates. A familiarity with the rules and processes of Model UN is a bonus but not necessary.

  • Secretary

As secretary your role will be to assist the chairs in committees by writing up amendments, working on slides and sorting notes. The role helps to ensure a smooth flow to committee rooms and clean presentation of finalised resolutions. Some technical knowledge, especially google slides, would be useful.

  • Special Rapporteur

As a special rap you will be the go to person for any questions from the committee on the relevant topic. Assisting in keeping debate relevant and factually correct, you will work with the chair and secretary to form the core volunteers that keep a committee running smoothly and enjoyably for all participants.

  • Regional Group Facilitator

As a regional group fac, you will be responsible for looking after participants in your regional group. Working in pairs or trios you will facilitate workshops, educational briefings and relevant outings. A key role in providing a sense of a home base for delegates, you will work as a team in building a sense of community through which delegates can engage with each other and the conference to the best of their ability. This role can feature periods of downtime during committee sessions during which you will assist in other areas of the conference where needed.

  • Welfare Officer

As a welfare officer you will act as part of the overall welfare team to ensure that the conference is a safe and enjoyable experience throughout all 4 days for everyone involved. Looking after the welfare of participants is essential in ensuring productivity and a positive atmosphere. A first aid and mental health certificate are preferred not required for the role. As a welfare officer you will also have the option to specialise as a liaison for either the queer or neurodiverse/accessibility programs.

  • Press Facilitator

As a press fac you’ll work with a team to bring out the creative potential of our press delegates. By assisting them with editing, basic journalism skills, and press panels you will help them create sometimes funny, sometimes serious and always interesting articles for the daily press paper.

  • Regional Delegation Team

As a member of the regional delegation team you will have the important role and opportunity to help provide a safe and comfortable environment for our delegates on the regional delegation. These delegates may be travelling away from home for the first time and so it is important that their welfare is well taken care of. This role is unique in that most of the work happens outside of conference hours. You will work as a team to look after the delegates overnight at the accommodations such as dinner outings and getting delegates to and from the conference. Free accommodation is provided for this role.

  • Logistics Officer

As a logistics officer you will be the cogs that keep the machine running. Assisting in setting up spaces, catering and equipment you will play an important role in the smooth running of the conference. The role may require more physical work than others.

  • Media Officer

As a media officer you will help capture memories and moments for delegates and volunteers alike to enjoy once the conference is over. If you have a passion for photography and a camera on hand this role offers opportunities to increase your personal skills in editing and capturing the small moments that make up the positive experience of NZMUN.

  • MPI LIaison

As a liaison in the Māori and Pasifika program you will work with the team to provide guidance and a friendly face for other MPI delegates. You will help foster a caring and friendly environment to assist them to succeed to their best ability. Double hatting as a general welfare volunteer may be required.

  • Queer LIaison

As a queer liaison you will be a point of guidance and a friendly face for the queer community present at the conference. Working together with your fellow team in the queer program you will provide a sense of safety and community for those who identify with the LGBTQ+ to have the resources and assistance to succeed.

  • ND/Accessibility Liaison

As a ND/Accessibility liaison you will assist in making sure the conference is as accessible and inclusive as possible. Working with your fellow liaisons you will help assist those who may need accommodations to be able to participate in the conference fully and in a fulfilling manner.

ABOUT UN YOUTH

UN Youth is a non-profit organisation that provides civics education outside the traditional classroom context. Through fun workshops and conferences, we engage youth in the most pressing affairs of their country and the international community. Our goal is to inspire young New Zealanders to be active, global citizens. Global citizenship exists in an incredibly diverse range of forms, and UN Youth provides opportunities for delegates to develop their own form of active citizenship. Throughout Aotearoa, our work equips young people to become informed, engaged, and critical New Zealanders who understand their global context and the connections between the local and the global. Annually, over 3000 young New Zealanders from Northland to Southland attend a UN Youth event, run by a body of over 150 volunteers across the country who dedicate many hours of their time to engaging young people and growing the organisation.
